Dear Parents,

With the rain finally behind us, we can look back on a busy and successful term at Swans. The weather did not dampen our spirits and our students have achieved some amazing things.

Football
Our teams enjoyed great success in the Mediterranean Cup in Verona, with students from Year 5 and 6 flying the flag for Swans and showing that this sport is going from strength to strength in our school. The U-11 Girls’ A team lost agonisingly on penalties, having led the Elite Final the whole way until the last two minutes. Nonetheless, coming second out of 17 teams from all over Europe and being awarded the Top Goalscorer and Best Player of the tournament is pretty impressive. The boys did equally well, losing in the semi-final of the Elite Competition and coming 4th overall, with 37 teams in their tournament. The standard was exceptional and we held our own among the best. A special mention to the Boys’ B Team, who lifted the Europa Trophy. Tremendous effort all round and thanks to the staff who attended.

We had our revenge a few days later, with the girls in Year 6-8 securing victory in the Sotogrande Tournament, winning the final on penalties! The boys also made the final but lost very narrowly by one goal. It is lovely to see the training and hard work paying off and students enjoying sport and trips at Swans.

Debating
We held our first Junior Debate Competition for local schools in March, inviting six local schools to compete with students from Year 8 and 9. It was a great day and the other students were very impressed by our school, our organisation and our Year 9 student marshalls, who guided them around the building for the day. Our debating skills were pretty good too, with us narrowly losing a hotly contested final, which was very difficult to judge. What made me even prouder was seeing our older students running and hosting the event, judging debates and giving feedback with great authority. Some of these students are as young as Year 10, and their maturity astounds me. 

We had great news from the European Youth Parliament in Spanish, where our Year 12 student Elena Gamero made it through the national round in Madrid and has been selected for an International Conference in The Hague. This is a brilliant opportunity and achievement, testing your teamwork and public speaking skills to the limit. 

Elsewhere, our Year 12 students just returned from Florence, where we were invited to a Model United Nations conference (MUN). Again, it was a wonderful experience and a huge thanks must go to Mr Rob King for seeking out so many opportunities for our students to enjoy.

IB
On the last day of term, we say goodbye to our IB students who begin their study leave ahead of their final exams in April/May. They have been a wonderful year group to work with and I know they will make us proud. They have received some outstanding university offers, including the London School of Economics (LSE), University College London, King’s College London, Durham University, University of Edinburgh, University of Bath, Universidad de Navarra, Utrecht University, Amsterdam and University of Applied Sciences. This means that there is a lot at stake but I know they have the drive and determination to succeed, and leave us well prepared for the next phase of their lives. We will look forward to celebrating their graduation at the end of May. 

(I)GCSE
Good luck also to our Year 11 students, who will begin their exams in the coming weeks. We will help them make the final preparations and am sure that they will gain some excellent results.

This week
As I write this, the Swans Greenpower Car team have just returned from another podium finish from a race in Cartagena, so well done to them. It has also been a week full of literary joy, as we celebrate Book Week with the English department, culminating in a dress-up day for a Zombie Apocalypse!

Estimados padres:

A pesar de las últimas lluvias, podemos decir que este ha sido un trimestre muy ajetreado y exitoso en Swans. El mal tiempo no nos afectó y nuestros estudiantes han logrado increíbles logros que mencionaremos a continuación. 

Fútbol
Nuestros equipos de fútbol tuvieron un gran éxito en la Copa del Mediterráneo en Verona (Italia), con alumnos de Year 5 y Year 6 representando a nuestro colegio y demostrando que este deporte está en pleno auge. El equipo femenino sub-11A perdió en los penaltis, tras haber dominado la final “Élite" hasta los últimos dos minutos. Sin embargo, quedar en segundo lugar de entre 17 equipos de toda Europa y ser galardonados como Máximo Goleador y Mejor Jugador del torneo es realmente impresionante. Los chicos lo hicieron igual de bien, perdiendo en la semifinal de la competición “Élite" y quedando en cuarto lugar en la clasificación general, con 37 equipos en su torneo. El nivel fue excepcional y durante todo el torneo nos mantuvimos entre los mejores. Quiero hacer una mención especial al equipo masculino B, que levantó el Trofeo Europa. Un esfuerzo tremendo por parte de todos y gracias al personal que estuvo presente.

En el Torneo de Sotogrande, tuvimos la revancha unos días después, cuando el equipo formado por las chicas de Year 6 a Year 8 se llevaron la victoria ¡ganando la final en los penaltis! Los chicos también llegaron a la final, pero perdieron por un estrecho margen de un gol. Es maravilloso ver cómo el entrenamiento y el trabajo duro dan sus frutos, y cómo los estudiantes disfrutan del deporte y de diferentes torneos en los que participa Swans.

Debate
En marzo celebramos nuestra primera Competición de Debate Juvenil para colegios locales, invitando a seis colegios a competir con alumnos de Year 8 y Year 9. Fue una jornada fantástica y todos los participantes quedaron muy impresionados con nuestro centro, nuestra organización y nuestros monitores de Year 9, quienes los guiaron por el edificio durante todo el día. Nuestras habilidades de debate también fueron excelentes, perdiendo por poco en una final muy disputada y que fue muy difícil de evaluar. Lo que me enorgullece aún más fue ver a nuestros alumnos mayores dirigiendo y presentando el evento, juzgando los debates y dando su opinión con gran autoridad. Algunos de estos estudiantes tan solo están en Year 10 y su gran madurez me asombra. 

Recibimos excelentes noticias de la competición de debate en español, Modelo de Parlamento Europeo (MEP), de nuestra alumna de Year 12 Elena Gamero, quien superó la ronda nacional en Madrid y fue preseleccionada para la competición internacional que tendrá lugar en La Haya. Esta es una oportunidad y un logro brillante, que pone a prueba el trabajo en equipo y las habilidades de oratoria. 

Por otra parte, nuestros alumnos de Year 12 acaban de regresar de Florencia, donde nos invitaron a una conferencia del Modelo de las Naciones Unidas (MUN). Una vez más, fue una gran experiencia y agradecemos enormemente a Mr. Rob King el poder brindar tantas oportunidades para que nuestros alumnos las disfruten. 

IB Bachillerato Internacional
En el último día del trimestre nos despedimos de nuestros alumnos de IB, quienes comenzarán su permiso de estudios antes de los exámenes finales que tendrán lugar entre los meses de abril y mayo. Han sido un curso maravilloso y sé que nos harán sentir muy orgullosos. Han recibido excelentes ofertas universitarias como la Escuela de Economía en Londres (LSE), la University College y King's College en Londres, la Universidad de Durham, la Universidad de Edimburgo, la Universidad de Bath, la Universidad de Navarra, la Universidad de Utrecht, Ámsterdam o la Universidad de Ciencias Aplicadas. Esto significa que hay mucho en juego, pero sé que tienen el empuje y la determinación para triunfar y están bien preparados para la siguiente etapa de sus vidas. Esperamos celebrar su graduación a finales de mayo.
 
(I)GCSE
Quiero desearles también mucha suerte a nuestros alumnos de Year 11, que empezarán sus exámenes en las próximas semanas. Les ayudaremos con los últimos preparativos y estoy seguro de que obtendrán excelentes resultados.

Esta semana
Mientras escribo esta carta, el equipo Swans Greenpower Car acaba de regresar de una carrera en el circuito de Cartagena con otro podio ¡Mi Enhorabuena! 

Esta semana también ha estado llena de alegría literaria, ya que celebramos la Semana del Libro organizado por el Departamento de Inglés, que culminó con un día de disfraces para un Apocalipsis Zombi. 

Una vez más, los últimos días, los profesores han estado nominando a los estudiantes más destacables de este trimestre.
