Dear Parents,

As we approach the end of February, I can look back on another half term of action at Swans. It has been a few weeks of fun activities, a bit of examination pressure, plenty of sickness (among students and staff) and some much needed rain, but we have made it through and are now looking forward to the second half of the year. Yesterday, we celebrated Día de Andalucía, with the Spanish department organising traditional food and activities connected to our region, which was a nice way to welcome the half term holiday. 

Mock Examinations

We started back with mock examinations for our Year 11 and 13 students, who found out their results in a formal assembly, where we try to emulate their actual results day(s) in July and August. Whether happy, sad or indifferent, the exams give the students some food for thought and can give them a focal point for revision in the coming months. We are proud of all their efforts and know that, through their drive and ambition, they will perform at their best by the time the final exams come around. 

Roll of Honour

As I write, I am looking forward to our other academic celebration this Friday, in the shape of the Roll of Honour ceremony, that we are now having to split into two sessions, due to the number of students being honoured. We should not be dismissive of what a great achievement this is, with students being awarded for top grades in over half of their subjects or displaying excellent effort across the board, and they should be proud if their photo is displayed in the entrance corridor. For those that did not make it this time, the message is to ‘keep going!’ as we love to celebrate hard work and application at Swans, and our Roll of Honour is there as a motivational tool. 

NESDA Debating/Acting Competition

We had some amazing news at the start of February, with our students in Year 11 and 12 winning both main categories of the NESDA competition in Barcelona. The competition was fierce, but all of the students were brilliant, with an all Swans semi-final in the debating, that was eventually won by Noah Sloan and Timur Matusevich, and the acting and monologue section won by Alina Mirzabekova and Connie Bermingham. Mr King and Miss Kate Haycock both attended, and came back glowing with pride for their performances, stating that this was some of the best debating ever produced by Swans students, particularly given the quality of the competition, with top international schools from all over Spain present. Well done to everyone involved!

Electric Car Project

You may have noticed the new shed that has appeared near the football pitch, which is home to our Electric Car Project. Dr Darren York has an enthusiastic team of students who are designing, building and marketing their super car, which we will hope to be competing with in races before the end of the year. It is a fantastic project that the school has invested in and is a real student team effort, so there will be lots of exciting news to come from this. 

Malaga University - Highly Able Project

Our Head of Learning Support, Mr Fletcher, organised for Year 9, 10, and 12 students to attend a specialist research project with Malaga University's Faculty of Science. The project is entitled IES Science and represents an excellent opportunity for our students to experience the reality of top-level scientific research in the surroundings of a university campus and Marbella’s Costa del Sol Hospital. 

Cancer Awareness Campaign

Once again, a group of our Year 12 students have been making and selling ribbons to raise awareness of the different types of cancer that exist and the impact that it has on people’s lives. This is a student-created project that they have launched themselves without teacher involvement and is an excellent initiative.

Careers Day/Options evening

As we look to the future, our Year 9 students are currently choosing their (I)GCSE options for next year, and we were fortunate enough to be joined by a large number of local professionals, to open the eyes of our students to different career paths. Organised by our University and Careers Counsellor, Louise Croft, the event was a very nice opportunity for them to gain some insight and knowledge about the future, as they make these important decisions about future study. Can I say a personal thank you to all of those parents that attended and made it a lovely event. Louise’s role has had a great impact on the school this year and many students and parents have taken the opportunity to discuss career paths and university courses, giving some direction in an ever more complex area. 

Ski trip

Once again, the school ski trip was well attended and the students enjoyed a wonderful few days in the Sierra Nevada, learning new skills and having fun with their peers. A big thank you to all the staff who organised and attended the trip, as it is a big responsibility.

Estimados padres:

Mientras nos acercamos al final de febrero, echo la vista atrás y recuerdo esta mitad de trimestre con una gran cantidad de eventos. Han sido algunas semanas de actividades divertidas, aunque también ha habido un poco de presión por los exámenes, muchos virus (entre los estudiantes y el personal) y un poco de lluvia, muy necesaria hoy día. Sin embargo, lo hemos logrado y ahora esperamos con ansias la segunda mitad del trimestre. Además, ayer celebramos el Día de Andalucía, con el Departamento de Español organizando actividades relacionadas con nuestra región y una comida tradicional andaluza, lo que fue una bonita manera de dar la bienvenida a las vacaciones de medio trimestre.

Exámenes Mock

Empezamos con los simulacros de exámenes de nuestros alumnos de Year 11 y Year 13, quienes conocieron sus resultados en una asamblea, donde vieron las posibles calificaciones que pueden obtener este verano. Felices, tristes o con indiferencia, estos exámenes dan a los estudiantes una idea de dónde deben enfocarse en las próximas revisiones. Estamos orgullosos de todos sus esfuerzos y sabemos que este proceso les llevará a sacar lo mejor de ellos para afrontar sus exámenes finales.

Cuadro de Honor

Mientras escribo esta carta, estoy muy ilusionado con nuestra otra celebración de este viernes, la ceremonia del Cuadro de Honor. Este año lo dividiremos en dos sesiones debido al gran número de alumnos seleccionados. No debemos menospreciar este gran logro, con estudiantes obteniendo los mejores resultados en más de la mitad de sus asignaturas, o mostrando un excelente esfuerzo en todos los ámbitos. Deberían estar orgullosos si su foto se exhibe en el panel del pasillo de la entrada. Para aquellos que no lo lograron esta vez, el mensaje es "¡sigue adelante!", ya que nos encanta celebrar el trabajo duro y la dedicación, y nuestro Cuadro de Honor está ahí como una herramienta de motivación.

Competición de NESDA debate y actuación

Tuvimos una noticia increíble a principios de febrero: nuestros alumnos de Year 11 y Year 12 ganaron las dos categorías principales del concurso de debate NESDA en Barcelona. La competición fue dura, pero todos los estudiantes estuvieron brillantes, con una semifinal donde el Colegio Swans consiguió representantes y donde finalmente ganaron Noah Sloan y Timur Matusevich. En la sección de actuación y monólogos ganaron Alina Mirzabekova y Connie Bermingham. Mr King y Miss Kate Haycock les acompañaron y volvieron orgullosos de sus actuaciones, afirmando que este fue uno de los mejores debates en los que han participado nuestros estudiantes de Swans, especialmente dada la calidad de la competición con los mejores colegios internacionales de toda España. ¡Bien hecho a todos los involucrados!

Proyecto - coche eléctrico

Seguramente habréis visto la nueva caseta que hay cerca del campo de fútbol. En ella se encuentra nuestro proyecto de un Coche

Eléctrico. Mr. Darren York tiene un equipo entusiasta de estudiantes que están diseñando, construyendo y comercializando su súper coche, con el que esperamos competir en carreras antes de finales de este año. Es un proyecto fantástico en el que el colegio ha invertido y es un verdadero esfuerzo que está realizando nuestro equipo de estudiantes, por lo que habrá muchas noticias interesantes en el futuro.

Universidad de Málaga - Highly Able Project

Nuestro Jefe de Apoyo al Aprendizaje, Mr. Fletcher, organizó un viaje para que los estudiantes de Year 9, Year 10 y Year 12 asistieran a un proyecto de investigación especializado con la Facultad de Ciencias de la Universidad de Málaga. El proyecto se titula IES Science y se trata de una excelente oportunidad para que nuestros estudiantes experimenten la realidad de la investigación científica de primer nivel en el entorno real de un campus universitario, así como en el Hospital Costa del Sol de Marbella.

Campaña de concienciación sobre el cáncer

Un año más, un grupo de alumnos de Year 12 han estado confeccionando y vendiendo lazos para concienciar sobre los diferentes tipos de cáncer que existen y el impacto que tiene en la vida de las personas. Este es un proyecto creado por los estudiantes que ellos mismos lanzaron sin la participación de los profesores, por lo que se trata de una excelente iniciativa.

Día de las carreras universitarias y tarde de opciones

De cara al futuro, nuestros estudiantes de Year 9 están en estos momentos eligiendo sus opciones de (I)GCSE para el próximo año y tuvimos la suerte de contar con un gran número de profesionales que abrieron los ojos a los alumnos a diferentes carreras y futuras profesiones. El evento fue organizado por nuestra consejera universitaria y profesional, Louise Croft y fue una excelente oportunidad para que los estudiantes obtuvieran algunas ideas y conocimientos, mientras toman estas importantes decisiones sobre estudios futuros. Me gustaría agradecer personalmente a todos los padres que asistieron e hicieron que fuera un gran evento. El papel de Louise ha tenido un gran impacto en el colegio este año, y muchos estudiantes y padres han aprovechado la oportunidad para hablar sobre trayectorias profesionales y cursos universitarios, dando cierta orientación en un área cada vez más compleja.

Viaje a Sierra Nevada

Una vez más, el viaje de esquí del colegio contó con una gran asistencia y los alumnos disfrutaron de unos días maravillosos en Sierra Nevada, aprendiendo nuevas habilidades y divirtiéndose con sus compañeros. Muchas gracias a todo el personal que organizó y asistió al viaje, ya que es una gran responsabilidad.
