Dear Parents

As 2022 draws to a close, we can look back on what has been an action-packed term at Swans Sierra Blanca. As you read this letter, our Christmas Show will have just taken place and I feel immense pride in the efforts of our Arts Department and our student cast, who have done a sterling job. It is a great achievement to put such a project together, especially while balancing regular lessons, numerous holidays, illnesses and school trips, so a huge thank you must go to Miss Kate, Mr Tim and the team for their commitment to making The Addams Family a roaring success. 

Getting trips up and running again has been such a joy, and the students have had some amazing experiences this term. The Year 11 ESO students had a wonderful time in Rome & Florence, taking in everything that the city has to offer including the Vatican, the Trevi Fountain and the Colosseum to name but a few, so congratulations to Señorita Mari Carmen and the Spanish Department. I had the pleasure of attending the Berlin trip, for history and Global Perspectives students from Years 10 to 13, which was also an inspiring visit. Organised by our Head of History, Mr Phil Newton, we took in a large variety of museums that focused on Nazi Germany and the city’s recent past during the Cold War, as well as a walk to the street art on the Berlin Wall, as well as a Christmas Market of course! The most humbling experience, however, was the visit to the Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp, which was a tour that the students will not forget. On all occasions, the students did us proud and we hope that the memories of these trips will stay with them forever.

In November, we hosted a debate competition for the schools on the coast which was a great success. Mr Rob King did the organisation and it was wonderful to see the school alive with hotly contested debates on all floors. Our students did brilliantly, with an all-Swans final for the Under-18 tournament, showing how far we have come in this discipline in recent years. There will be further events in the new year, with Swans even hosting the national phase of the European Youth Parliament next summer.

Over Christmas, our students in Years 11 and 13 will be preparing for their Mock Examinations, which begin as soon as we return on January 9th. For the Year 13s this is particularly important, as they are currently receiving their offers of places from universities, including an interview at the University of Cambridge to study Engineering, so there is a lot at stake. On the same subject, our Year 12s recently attended a university fair to gain some information about studying abroad and to help them make choices for their future, but what made me extra happy was the way that our students stood out from the rest with their new dress code. This was commented on by the exhibitors and organisers, and makes me feel that we have made a big step with our Sixth Form this year, so our thanks must go to Miss Michelle for overseeing this change.

Queridos padres,

A medida que 2022 se acerca a su fin, podemos echar la vista atrás a lo que ha sido un trimestre lleno de acción en Swans Sierra Blanca. Mientras leen esta carta, nuestro espectáculo de Navidad acaba de tener lugar y me siento inmensamente orgulloso de los esfuerzos de nuestro Departamento de Arte y nuestro elenco de estudiantes, que han hecho un trabajo excelente. Es un gran logro llevar a cabo un proyecto así, especialmente mientras se compaginan con las clases, numerosas vacaciones, enfermedades y losviajes escolares, así que muchas gracias a Miss Kate, Mr Tim y a todo el equipo por su compromiso en hacer de La Familia Addams un éxito rotundo.

Volver a poner en marcha las excursiones ha sido una gran alegría, y los alumnos han vivido experiencias increíbles este trimestre.  Los alumnos de Year 11 ESO lo pasaron de maravilla en Roma, disfrutando de todo lo que la ciudad tiene que ofrecer, incluyendo el Vaticano, la Fontana de Trevi y el Coliseo, por nombrar sólo algunos, así que enhorabuena a la señorita Mari Carmen y al. Departamento de Español. Tuve el placer de asistir al viaje a Berlín, para los alumnos de Historia y Perspectivas Globales de los cursos 10 a 13, que también fue una visita inspiradora. Organizada por nuestro Jefe de Historia, el Sr. Phil Newton, visitamos una gran variedad de museos centrados en la Alemania nazi y el pasado reciente de la ciudad durante la Guerra Fría, así como un paseopor el arte callejero del Muro de Berlín, además de un mercadillo navideño, ¡por supuesto! La experiencia más humilde, sin embargo, fue la visita al Campo de Concentración de Sachsenhausen, que fue una visita que los estudiantes no olvidarán. En todas las ocasiones, los alumnos nos hicieron sentir orgullosos y esperamos que los recuerdos de estos viajes permanezcan con ellos para siempre.

 

 

En noviembre organizamos un concurso de debate para los colegios de la costa que fue todo un éxito. El Sr. Rob King se encargó de la organización y fue maravilloso ver la escuela viva con debates muy disputados en todos los ámbitos. Nuestros alumnos lo hicieron de manera brillante, con una final de Swans para el torneo Sub-18, lo que demuestra lo lejos que hemos llegado en esta disciplina en los últimos años. Habrá más eventos en el nuevo año, y Swans incluso albergará la fase nacional del Parlamento Europeo de la Juventud el próximo verano.

Durante las Navidades, nuestros alumnos de Year 11 y Year 13 se prepararán para sus simulacros de examen, que comenzarán en cuanto volvamos el 9 de enero. Para los alumnos de Year 13 esto es especialmente importante, ya que actualmente están  recibiendo sus ofertas de plaza en las universidades, incluyendo una entrevista en la Universidad de Cambridge para estudiar Ingeniería, por lo que hay mucho en juego. Sobre el mismo tema, nuestros alumnos de Year 12 asistieron recientemente a una feria universitaria para obtener información sobre estudios en el extranjero y para ayudarles a tomar decisiones para su futuro, pero lo que me hizo más feliz fue la forma en que nuestros estudiantes se destacaron del resto con su nuevo código de vestimenta. Esto fue comentado por los expositores y organizadores, y me hace sentir que hemos dado un gran paso con nuestro Sixth Form este año, por lo que nuestro agradecimiento debe ir a Miss Michelle por supervisar este cambio.  Los profesores han estado votando por los estudiantes que han hecho cosas especiales este semestre, y aquí están los nominados para el Premio del Director.
