Dear Parents

As half term approaches, the beginning of September feels like a long time ago, with so much taking place in the past few weeks. There have been a number of new faces at Swans this year, but everyone seems to have settled in really well and is now forming part of our community. I write to you having just attended the IB Global Conference in The Hague, which was an inspiring and thought-provoking event, a chance to celebrate what an IB education brings to young people and also to see the future direction that the organisation will take. It reaffirmed to me that we have made the right decision as a school to have the Diploma as our qualification in the Sixth Form, with all that it brings to their future. 

In sports, we enjoyed great success in the swimming gala held at EIC, with a huge haul of medals from across the year groups, a sign that swimming continues to be a key strength in our sporting programme. The after-school Swim Squad is really well attended this year and also recently began one of a series of galas at the Piscina Municipal de Marbella, where 68 students competed against swimmers from the Club Natacion Marbella and other local schools. It was a great event and our students did us proud. Elsewhere, our Swans football teams have begun competing in the local league and there have been a number of fixtures held at the school with a very nice atmosphere and some great results. 

As mentioned in my welcome back letter, we are now leaving Covid restrictions behind and there have been a number of trips organised to get us back to normal. I enjoyed a lovely day out with Year 7 on our annual trip to Málaga, taking in the key sites and learning about our local history and the different phases of the city’s development over thousands of years. As you read this, the Spanish department will be enjoying their trip to Rome and Florence; a wonderful opportunity for the Year 11 students studying ESO to visit the ‘eternal city’ and reinforce their learning. We also have a Berlin trip planned for November by the History department for students in Key Stage 4 and a London trip for Sixth form students organised by the Theatre and Film department. 

 

A big thank you must go to our Sixth form students, who have embraced the new dress code with positivity. Despite a few teething problems, I think you will agree that they are looking very smart; a huge improvement from previous years and this is being reflected in their work ethic and conduct around school, where they set a great example to our younger students. As part of their IB CAS activities, Year 12 deliver a weekly reading session with students in Year 6, and it is lovely to see the interaction between them and the way that they play the role of ‘teacher’, so well done to all of them. 

After the half-term break, the pressure and excitement begin for Miss Kate and her Drama team and cast, as the students make their final preparations for our Christmas show ‘The Addams Family’, which will be held at the Palacio de Congresos in Marbella on Thursday 15th December I am sure that it will be a spectacular event and I urge you to buy tickets when they become available. Likewise, we will also be sending news of our Christmas Fayre, which will be making a welcome return in early December.

Estimados padres

A medida que nos acercamos a la mitad del trimestre, parece como si el comienzo de septiembre hubiera sido hace mucho tiempo, debido a la gran cantidad de acontecimientos de las últimas semanas. Este curso tenemos caras nuevas en Swans, pero todos parecen haberse adaptado muy bien y ya forman parte de nuestro colegio. Le escribo después de haber asistido a la Conferencia global del IB en La Haya, un evento inspirador y estimulante, y una gran oportunidad para celebrar lo que la educación del IB aporta a los jóvenes y para comprobar qué dirección tomará la organización en el futuro. Me reafirmó en que hemos tomado la decisión correcta como colegio al tener el diploma como nuestra calificación en Sixth Form, con todo lo que traerá para el futuro de nuestros estudiantes.

En el ámbito deportivo, tuvimos un gran éxito en la gala de natación celebrada en el EIC, con una gran cantidad de medallas en todos los cursos, muestra de que la natación sigue siendo un punto fuerte en nuestro programa deportivo, de hecho, la extraescolar de natación es de las más solicitadas este año. También comenzaron recientemente las competiciones en la Piscina Municipal de Marbella, donde 68 estudiantes compitieron contra nadadores del Club Natación Marbella y otras escuelas locales. Fue un gran evento y nuestros estudiantes nos hicieron sentir muy orgullosos. Por otra parte, nuestros equipos de fútbol de Swans han comenzado a competir en la liga local y ya se han celebrado varios encuentros en el colegio con un ambiente muy agradable y algunos resultados excelentes.

Como mencioné en mi carta de bienvenida, poco a poco estamos dejando atrás las restricciones de la Covid19, por lo que se han podido organizar varios viajes que nos hacen volver a la normalidad. Disfruté de un hermoso día con Year 7 en nuestro viaje anual a Málaga, recorriendo los lugares más emblemáticos y aprendiendo sobre nuestra historia local y las diferentes fases del desarrollo de la ciudad durante miles de años. Mientras lees esto, el Departamento de Español estará disfrutando de su viaje cultural a Roma y Florencia. Se trata de una magnífica oportunidad para que los alumnos de Year 11 de la ESO visiten la ‘ciudad eterna’ y de este modo refuercen su aprendizaje de cursos anteriores en Historia e Historia del Arte. De igual modo, en noviembre tenemos planeado un viaje a Berlín para estudiantes de Key Stage 4, organizado por el Departamento de History y un viaje a Londres para estudiantesde Sixth Form, organizado por el departamento de Theatre and Film.

 

Un gran agradecimiento debe ir para nuestros estudiantes de Sixth Form, que han acogido el nuevo código de vestimenta con positividad. A pesar de algunos problemas al inicio del curso, creo que estarán de acuerdo conmigo en que ahora están más elegantes. Es una gran mejora con respecto a años anteriores, que se refleja en su ética de trabajo y conducta en el colegio, dando un gran ejemplo a nuestros estudiantes más jóvenes. Como parte de sus actividades de IB CAS, Year 12 imparte una sesión de lectura semanal con los alumnos de Year 6 y es maravilloso ver la interacción entre ellos y la forma en que desempeñan el papel de ‘maestro’, así que, bien hecho por ellos.

Después de Half Term comienza la presión y la emoción para Miss Kate, su equipo de teatro y todo el elenco, ya que los estudiantes realizarán los preparativos finales para nuestro espectáculo navideño ‘La familia Addams’, que se llevará a cabo en el Palacio de Congresos de Marbella el próximo jueves 15 de diciembre, estoy seguro de que será una actuación espectacular y os animo a comprar las entradas cuando estén disponibles. Asimismo, pronto os informaremos de nuestra Feria de Navidad, que volverá a celebrarse a principios de diciembre.
