We launched our Swans School Run for Rifcom challenge before the Christmas holidays – motivating our community to actively fundraise and generate awareness for the charity.
The challenge was to virtually run 4000km from Marbella, across the Med, doing the whole perimeter of Morocco and back to the starting point. In fact, 72 participants collectively ran/walked (and recorded) 4213km, over a 3-month time period.
Participants paid a small entrance fee and collected sponsorship for their efforts. A total of 520€ was raised and has now been donated to Rifcom. Thank you to all who contributed! This money goes towards the rural communities of the Rif Mountains, supporting adult and child education, health, welfare and environmental projects, whilst also looking to create sustainable income opportunities. Since June 2020 Rifcom has been working closely with a disabled association providing basic food and hygiene products to people who are struggling badly in the COVID crisis.
We asked our runners to share photos of their adventures, and we’ve so enjoyed seeing everybody using this as a great opportunity to enjoy the beautiful Andalucian countryside. Even during times of travel restrictions, we exercised and explored.
The challenge was also a house team competition, with house points awarded to all participants for their contributions. Congratulations to Kestrels for earning an impressive 230 house points. The Eagles, Falcons and Hawks also earned many well-deserved points for their teams.
Rifcom is one of our house charities, meaning that we hold regular fundraising and support activities throughout the academic year. Previous initiatives have included cake sales, a mask competition, Student Council making friendship bracelets, warm clothes and shoe collections.
Hands-on experience working in rural schools and assisting with dental hygiene education has taken place for six years on the annual CAS IB trip, usually held in October.
Mencia in Year 12 was fundamental in the organisation and management of the Run for Rifcom fundraising activity, Please click the image below to view her presentation, summarising what was achieved and why.
Mencia has also created a video with Miss Anne that details the current situation in Morocco, and all of Rifcom’s recent work to ease the hardships.
Rifcom is a non-profit charity, run by volunteers in Spain and Gibraltar. They focus on helping impoverished areas with donations of school supplies, setting up and running pre-schools, developing sustainable projects such as a sewing co-operative and currently provide basic foods and hygiene products for a group of disabled people.
They paid for the building of a primary school in Benizid which houses around 400 children and has become a model for the province.
Fundraising is vital to our mission and challenge treks are run annually.
