Swans School has earned its reputation as “the reading school”.
We know that lots of reading translates into better academic performance overall.
Yet with all of the challenges presented during the months of lockdown and online learning, the Swans English Department were very aware that there was a danger that our students’ usually very strong motivation to read could falter.
Without being able to reward the top reading classes with the much sought-after Pizza Parties, we felt the need for a new incentive. So, the Lockdown Reading Challenge was launched – with a fantastic response.
Our avid readers competed for the most words read. Huge congratulations must go to overall winner Jazmin in Year 10, with an incredible 1.8 million words read in just 4 months.
Not far behind were year group winners: Irena in Year 8, Daria in Year 9, and Carla in Year 11.
Form group 8TP read an incredible 5 million words collectively, and were worthy recipients of the trophy and a special “Cake Break”, which saw them dining on popcorn and cake with music during morning break time.
We also saw some incredible results in our category for the greatest increase in reading age.
