The Swans School Debate Team made us proud with a truly fantastic performance at the IE University Debate Tournament last weekend.
This prestigious and challenging event was originally scheduled for February, and it was with great disappointment that the students learned of its forced last-minute cancellation due to the onset of Covid-19. However, the reformatted online version proved to be a great success. Swans School was represented by six students from Year 11 and Year 12: Seve, Mencía, Maciej, Roni, Jess, Shahina.
All students communicated confidently and articulately, showing respect and strength in equal measure. Debate subjects ranged from the use of dubbing in foreign language films and cult of personalities, to harassment in the workplace and Spain’s colonial past.
Shahina, Jess and Mencia won their match against Brains School from Madrid whilst Roni and Seve got a special recommendation due to their active participation in the event as a whole.
The Tournament concluded with Shahina announced as the overall winner and our entire team labelled as “debate rockstars”. We couldn’t agree more! Our debating teams – whether in Key Stage 3, Key Stage 4 or in the sixth form – go from strength to strength.
