LANGUAGES AT SWANS PRIMARY SCHOOL
Spanish is a very important part of the School Curriculum. We offer Spanish literature and science in Key Stages 1 & 2 . This allows students to follow their studies in schools all around Spain.
In Foundation, children have an English assistant and a Spanish assistant in the classroom and therefore they are listening to both languages throughout the day.
In Key Stage 1 and 2, except for the first year, children who have trouble with the language are offered the possibility to follow another course called SFL (Spanish as a Foreign Language) which works parallel to Mainstream Spanish but is adapted to each of the children’s needs.
The last year of Key Stage 2 transfers to our secondary building in Sierra Blanca. This allows the children to get to know how a Secondary School works and what will be expected of them.
Other Languages
Teaching young children a new language contributes to the pupil and makes them aware of others and accept other ways of life. As with any other area of the curriculum, language learning at Primary level has to be a preparation, a firm grounding for future learning.
From the age of five years old, children can have a first contact with the French language thanks to the extra activities.
There is also an opportunity to learn Mandarin from Year 4.
From the age of eight, learning a third language becomes compulsory at Swans School:
• Year 4 students have French once a week
• Year 5 and Year 6 students have French once a week
Method
Children experience a variety of language-learning techniques. They should follow a programme which is suited to their age and use methods appropriate to their level of development. Pupils have to become facilitators of their own learning.
