FOUNDATION STAGE
SWANS PRIMARY SCHOOL
In the Foundation Stage we have Early Years and Reception classes. The Foundation Stage Curriculum is organised into six areas of learning, which focus on introducing and developing new skills, knowledge and understanding.
FootprintsIn Early Years the main aim is for the children to enjoy themselves, learning through play and a multi-topic approach. They are in a self-contained classroom setting with an English teacher and two full-time assistants, one of whom is Spanish. The children begin to learn their letter sounds in this year group using a wide range of resources and the ´Jolly Phonics´ published scheme.

Practical Numeracy
Continuing on from Early Years, as children enter Reception, they build
on the letter sound knowledge they have in accordance with the
Government Letters and Sounds Document. Children begin to read and
write in this year group. Numeracy is taught through carefully
planned structured play activities and practical lessons. This planning
takes into consideration the learning styles, experiences and abilities
within the group. In Reception we also have two full-time bilingual
assistants to support the teachers. We provide children with activities
that build on and extend their interests and develop their
intellectual, physical, social and emotional abilities.
